Volume-Adaptive Footwear
Traditional footwear sizing relies on length and width, and occasionally added “depth,” but these static measurements often fail people with swelling, asymmetry, or changing foot volume. An emerging approach — Volume Adaptive (or Adjustable Volume) Footwear — focuses on accommodating three-dimensional changes in the foot by allowing the shoe to adjust around variable shape and volume rather than forcing the foot into a fixed structure.
This concept is particularly relevant for conditions such as lymphoedema, post-surgical swelling, or unilateral volume differences, where standard extra-wide or extra-depth shoes may not resolve fit or comfort issues.
